Very successful first meeting of the Women in Security group

CERN EventOn Thursday May 09th 2019 the WIS had the great opportunity to visit the CERN in Geneva. The CERN is the European Organization for Nuclear Research (https://home.cern/).

This visit was made possible thanks to the willingness and kindness of Mr. Carmelo Saitta, General Insurance Manager, Head of DHO Support Unit, Finance and Administrative Processes Department and Mr. Didier Constant, Head of Security; who organized the visit and welcomed our group.

The event started with a discovery of the CERN history and activity. The CERN was initially created after WWII, when some visionary scientists identified the need for Europe to have a world-class physics research facility. After an insight in the organization’s history we were presented with the Synchrocyclotron, CERN’s first particle accelerator, built in 1957 and decommissioned in 1991. It now serves as part of a very impressive audio-visual display to explain how particle accelerators work.

After this highly instructive visit we headed to the presentation made by the Head of Security. Mr. Constant exposed us with the strategic security aspects of such an important site located in two countries (France & Switzerland), with more than 17’000 collaborators (including staff and visiting scientists) from more than 100 different countries; and about 130’000 visitors per year! The presentation was very interesting and interactive.

It was a very informative event and an excellent opportunity to network for the WIS. In the name of the Switzerland Chapter of ASIS International, I would like once again to sincerely thank Mr. Saitta and Mr. Constant from the CERN for this great opportunity.
